Jason’s October Monthly Message
Are You a Gentle Soul?
True gentleness is almost impossible to cultivate in this world, because we all tend to defend ourselves from perceived external attacks of all kinds by attacking others back. But ultimately, the wholly gentle will triumph against all kinds of aggression.
To begin to cultivate the spiritual quality of gentleness, you first have to understand that being gentle does not mean being weak. In fact, only the truly gentle in our world are truly strong. When students practise to perfect my Infinite Tai Chi Form over several years, I see them becoming less edgy and gentler, as their moves soften and become much more flowing and relaxed. But with that outward gentleness comes a real inner strength.
Most human beings think that they need to be forceful, or even physically strong and intimidating, in order to feel safer in a dangerous, aggressive world, but this type of strength never lasts and can never provide us with the perfect safety and security that we all long for.
According to A Course in Miracles, our true-self can neither harm nor be harmed. However, you will need to cultivate deep inner peace and unshakeable strength in a higher power that will protect you at all times in life – even as you walk through the valley of death – before you will become wholly harmless. Until you feel totally safe in eternal love and light, you will inevitably attack others from time to time – if only with your attacking thoughts – in a vain attempt to protect yourself from external threats, and so you will not be totally harmless.
If you are reading this, I am sure that you are a pretty peaceful and kind person. But you may not yet realise that every angry or judgemental thought that you entertain about anyone, including terrorists, corrupt politicians or your impossible mother-in-law, is a harmful, aggressive thought that creates more division and conflict in our world. Basically, until you rise above all of your judgemental thoughts, you cannot be truly kind, peaceful or gentle. I know that this might seem like ‘Mission Impossible’, but this is the direction of all genuine spiritual paths; from fear and conflict to love and peace.
Once we dwell in the absolute truth of total enlightenment, we will realise that reality is totally non-aggressive and totally harmless. However, before we reach a state of complete enlightenment, we first need to establish a strong connection to the light. The more we connect to this light, for example in a deep meditation, the more we will realise that this light will always keep us incredibly safe, even in this world of endless dangerous illusions.
To become truly gentle, you just have to keep assiduously cultivating other spiritual qualities, such as compassion, generosity and trust. You also have to keep connecting to the love and light of Christ, Buddha or another transcended spiritual master. You have to keep connecting to eternal love and light until they really start to permeate your whole being. Only then will you begin to trust life, and only when you trust life 100 per cent, can you be gentle and loving at all times
Love and light will protect every aspect of your dream life, including your physical health and well-being. Once you have established a strong connection to these eternal features of Life Itself, your physical body will automatically stay strong and healthy for as long as you need it. Your physical body will be strong enough for you to tread a steep awakening path back home to the eternal truth, and then to assist other suffering souls to awake as you have done. But remember; love and light can never override your free will and choice. If you choose egoic victimhood over spiritual strength, not even Jesus Christ or Buddha will contradict you.
Moreover, even after some very genuine spiritual seekers have made a strong connection to the light, they may have to endure quite a long period of ill health, physical pain or weakness, or emotional turbulence, as they burn off past karma. As we awake and heal, we do begin to transcend our karmic script, but even after we have stopped creating more negative karma for our future, our past karma can be rather like a speeding train. The driver of a speeding train can slam on the breaks, but it will still take some time for the train to come to a complete stop!
You need a physical body to awake. You also need a physical body for a while in order to learn some life lessons and to sharpen your core skills and qualities, but every time you entertain any kind of bodily concern, you will become fearful and whenever you are fearful, you cannot be loving. So please keep reminding yourself that your physical body is just a temporary learning device – nothing less and nothing more.
Do your best not to be too concerned about the state of your body. Be more concerned about your energy levels and the strength of your connection to the light. When you finally rise above egoic ‘me’ consciousness, you will no longer be so fearful, and then you can be gentle.
Whenever we identify ourselves as separate egoic-selves, we cannot be wholly gentle or harmless, because the ego always tries to use our bodies to smash and grab what it wants from the world around it. For example, a lonely ego may pretend that it will love a potential life-partner forever, but once its loneliness has been assuaged, it will tend to become indifferent to the former object of its desire.
So to sum up the problem: whenever your mind is split, and you choose to listen to the fearful, aggressive egoic voice inside your split mind, you will automatically attack yourself and others in some way or another and thus forget that the real you is always gentle and kind. The solution to all of this is to keep focussing on returning home to wholeness, because a whole mind is wholly gentle and completely harmless.
When you are gentle at all times, everyone will be far less afraid of you. In normal human existence, we are all so afraid of one another, that none of us is totally gentle, loving or trustworthy. But once you finally give up all egoic attack thoughts and become truly gentle and harmless, others can lay down their defences for a while in your safe loving presence. What a beautiful gift to give to humanity!
