Awakening To Your Real Self
This month, I am beginning a new three year Mastership course. My sincere prayer for all my students is that they will fully awaken to the miraculous truth about themselves and Life. I know that awakening to the ultimate truth is an extremely challenging path and so I keep supporting my awakening students by teaching one course after another, even though my personality-self would quite like to take a break after over 30 years of non-stop teaching! I have to keep going because I know that until they are fully awake, none of my students will find any lasting satisfaction or joy in life.
Have you noticed that you never feel as though your life is perfect just the way it is? Why do we always think that our lives would be better if we lived in another place, had a different partner or embarked on a new career? We can never find lasting satisfaction with ourselves and our lives, no matter how hard we try.
Have you yet realised that the core reason for your inability to dwell in love, peace and joy in the present moment is your deep sense of unworthiness and lack? We constantly find fault with ourselves and reject ourselves, but then we spit out this self-rejection and blame others or the world around us for all of our endless stress, jealousy, fear, anger, bitterness, or disappointment with life. We blame our job for our unhappiness, or our partner, or our bank balance, without ever stopping to realise that all this is simply a projection of our own subconscious self-hatred.
Because we do not feel completely whole and wholly worthy of love, our minds tend to wander all over the place, desperately seeking for what we feel as though we lack. We always feel as though there is something not quite right about our lives in the here and now, and so we always miss being fully alive in the eternal present moment. But if you learn to align, breathe and connect to your centre, you can start to become fully present in the ‘Power of Now’ and so you can begin to awake from the horribly unsatisfying dream that we call normal life.
However, even after you learn to stay present in the moment – for example, by diligently practising The Infinite Arts – you still have to keep mindfully observing all of your thoughts and feelings. You cannot afford to ignore your personality-self as you awake to your real self. Your personality-self will not disappear for a very long time. It will always be there, but you can at least train it to serve your highest purpose in life.
Your ‘me’ self is complex and troubling, and so you have to commit to getting to know it inside out. This will take a lot of effort because at present, so much of your hatred and fear is hidden from your conscious mind. So you have to begin to shine the light into all the hidden, dark programming that is literally leading you to self-destruct.
A lot of spiritual seekers just want to bliss themselves out from time to time in the spiritual light. They are not yet ready to face their own hidden darkness, and then to utilise the light to assist them to release and to heal all of that darkness. Most people do not want to know about their shadow side, and so they keep themselves totally distracted by being busy doing nothing 24/7.
But if you are really determined to find lasting satisfaction in life, you now need to illuminate your mind with a higher light so that you can begin to see the truth about yourself. Your soul is always longing to break free from being imprisoned by your personality-self, but without awakening, you have no idea about your soul’s longing. On the other hand, the more we awake and illuminate ourselves in the light, the more our soul can expand into total freedom.
Do you realise that you have actually made your personality-self up? As you grew up, you created an image for yourself and then say ‘I am ‘married/single/divorced’ or ‘I am a lawyer/nurse/accountant’. But is this the real you, or just a story you are telling about yourself? If you cling to this image, you will be devastated when someone damages it. You make up a story that you are happily married, and then your partner tells you that they want a divorce, and you are distraught. However, once you connect to the real you, you will start to be far less affected by threats to your made-up, temporary image self.
When you first connect to the real you or your soul, you may experience a sense of being re-born as though you were a new born baby. At first, you may feel rather vulnerable and confused, but the more you connect to the real you that existed before you were born this lifetime and will still exist after your very temporary personality-self passes away, the more you will be able to laugh at your personality-self’s endless moodiness.
You can only be truly alive when you are connected to your soul and dwelling in the light in this moment, this now. Most people drift through their whole lives trying to cling to their past, or fantasising about the future, but life can only be lived in the present moment.
To be truly alive, we first have to become supremely conscious. We have to be able to observe all of our passing thoughts and feelings, so that eventually, we can master our own minds and become the masters of our own lives. It takes tremendous effort and soul searching to stop giving all our power away to our lower mind and to the external world that our egoic mindset perceives as the cause of all its endless problems.
It takes real mind discipline to stop believing the painful stories our ego tells, such as, ‘I do not have enough money’. It takes a lot of mind training to rise above all our fearful egoic programming and to connect to the spiritual light that is food for our soul. But we urgently need to learn to ignore the constant whinging of our egoic mind so that we can focus solely on divine peace, love, light and beauty. Just keep your focus on all these miraculous phenomena and ignore all of the rest.
In a deep meditative state, you can bypass your thinking mind and connect to your soul. But you cannot just say to yourself, ‘I want to go really deep in this meditation’. It takes time and effort to build up your capacity to do this. So please be extremely patient with yourself as you master this key life-saving skill.
Until you can keep bringing your mind back to the peace, joy, love and beauty of the present moment, you are not really living at all. You are just dreaming endless nightmares in which you appear to be the helpless victim of external circumstances. You are basically a dream figure who has no control whatsoever over the dream. You think that your life is so real, but no one else even notices it because it is just your crazy dream. However, once you gain even a glimpse of your real- self, you are on the Path of Awakening. Your journey home to lasting love, peace and joy has finally begun, and if you are wise, you will let absolutely nothing distract you from continuing on this miraculous path until you reach your final destination.
